How El Niño becomes a good question
El Niño is happening in the tropical Pacific, thousands of kilometres from Boston. Does it change tomorrow's high at Logan? This unit separates weather, climate and ENSO, reads the real Oceanic Niño Index, and turns a big claim into a question that data could actually test.
60-minute lesson + 20-minute round touchReal data: NOAA CPC ONI 1950–2026, Boston wintersBean-bag exercise marked SYNTHETIC
Goals and exit evidence
- Sort statements into weather, climate and ENSO, and say why one Boston day cannot prove or disprove El Niño.
- Read the ONI: a 3-month running mean of sea surface temperature anomalies in the Niño 3.4 region; warm episodes at +0.5 °C or more, cold at −0.5 °C or less, for at least five overlapping seasons.
- Separate "more likely" from "certain", and correlation from cause; rewrite a big claim as a testable question.
Exit evidence: a claim–evidence–still-unknown card and one bounded hometown hypothesis. Your forecast score for the round is unchanged by this unit: it adds no points for reasoning.
Story hook
Fishermen off Peru and Ecuador noticed long ago that in some years the sea turned unusually warm around Christmas, and named it El Niño. Today buoys and satellites measure that warmth across the Pacific. In 2026 the index climbed season after season; the latest value in our copy of NOAA's table is …. A friend says: "So this winter in Boston will definitely be warm." Is that a fair conclusion? By the end of this unit you will be able to say exactly what the data can and cannot support.
Current ENSO status (from CPC, with its date)
As of the CPC ENSO Diagnostic Discussion issued 8 October 2026: El Niño Advisory. That page reports Niño-3.4 at +2.1 °C for the past month and says impacts consistent with El Niño are more likely, though not certain. The next discussion is scheduled for 12 November 2026: recheck CPC before you quote a status. RUDO does not issue ENSO status; CPC does.
ONI and RONI. CPC now also publishes the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI): the Niño 3.4 anomaly minus the average tropical (20°N–20°S) anomaly, rescaled to the same variance. It asks "is this region warm compared with the rest of the tropics?" CPC's October 2026 outlooks are verified with RONI. The RONI table (retrieved 2026-10-28) lists JAS 2026 as 1.7; our copy of the traditional ONI gives … for the same season. Two honest indices, two numbers: always say which one you mean.
Concepts
1 · Weather, climate, ENSO
Weather is one station on one day. Climate is the long-term statistical distribution, for example 1991–2020 normals. ENSO is a large ocean–atmosphere state of the tropical Pacific that shifts the odds of some kinds of weather in some regions and seasons.
2 · The chain to New England
Weaker trade winds let warm water slosh east; the rising air of the Walker circulation follows it. That shift disturbs the patterns linking the tropics to mid-latitudes and moves the jet streams. NOAA notes the U.S. influence is strongest in winter, and that typical impacts may happen as often as 80% or as rarely as 40% of the time.
3 · Probability, not guarantee
For Boston the winter link to ENSO is weak and unstable. So a short run of Boston forecast scores is not a test of El Niño. Seasonal statistics (winter means over many years) are the right place to look, and even there "more often" is not "always".
Link to the model ladder. Reference model M7 calibrates the forecast separately for each calendar month, a stand-in for "season or ENSO phase". Whether such a split helps is a question for evidence: with few months of data, splitting can add noise instead of skill. See the model bench.
Worked example: reading the real ONI
The table below is parsed live from NOAA CPC's oni.ascii.txt (copied 2026-10-20, sha256 in SOURCES.json). Each row is a 3-month season: JAS = July–August–September. ANOM is the anomaly in °C relative to the base period.
下表由页面从 NOAA CPC 的 oni.ascii.txt(2026-10-20 复制,sha256 见 SOURCES.json)实时解析。
| Season | Year | Niño 3.4 SST °C | ONI anomaly °C | Phase (±0.5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loading data… | ||||
A single season above +0.5 is not yet an El Niño episode in the historical record: CPC needs the threshold met for five consecutive overlapping seasons. The summary line above counts how many seasons in a row the 2026 run has so far in our copy.
Activity A · ONI explorer and episode finder
Choose a range of years. Bars above +0.5 °C are warm (gold), below −0.5 °C cold (blue), the rest neutral (grey). The finder lists runs of at least five overlapping seasons, using values rounded to 0.1 °C as CPC does for its episode table.
Activity B · Do El Niño winters run warm in Boston?
Each Boston winter (December–February mean temperature, RCC-ACIS threaded Boston record) is matched with the ONI value for the same DJF season and sorted into El Niño, neutral or La Niña. Write your guess first: which group is warmest, and by how much? Then compute.
Read this carefully. Every group contains winters on both sides of the average, and the difference between groups is small compared with the spread inside each group. Long-term warming, other climate patterns and how strong each event was all mix in. CPC's own pages say stronger events raise the chance of typical impacts but never guarantee them. Cannot tell is not the same as does not exist.
Check for understanding
1. Sort: (a) Logan's high tomorrow may be 9 °C; (b) a station's 1991–2020 winter statistics; (c) the ocean–atmosphere state of the tropical Pacific; (d) one heavy rainstorm this week.
Answer
(a) weather forecast, (b) climate statistics, (c) ENSO-type large-scale state, (d) weather observation.
2. SYNTHETIC bean bags: region Z has 40 imaginary winters. Group E: 14 warm of 20. Group N: 9 warm of 20. What are the two warm shares, and is E certain to be warm?
Answer
E: 14/20 = 70%. N: 9/20 = 45%. The gap is 25 percentage points; relative to 45% that is an increase of about 55.6%, a different quantity. E is not certain: 6 of 20 (30%) were not warm. This is a synthetic association, not Boston history and not proof of cause.
E:14/20 = 70%;N:9/20 = 45%。
3. One season of ONI reads +0.7. Is an El Niño episode now in the historical record?
Answer
Not yet. The threshold must hold for at least five consecutive overlapping seasons, and CPC also looks for matching changes in winds, pressure and rainfall.
4. SYNTHETIC: a family's heating use fell 10% in a winter that was 2 °C colder; the same year they insulated the house and spent less time at home. Does this prove colder means less energy?
Answer
No. Insulation and time at home changed at the same time. Draw it: weather → heating need; insulation → efficiency; time at home → total use. The drop cannot be credited to weather alone.
5. Rewrite: "El Niño will cause a power cut at our home tomorrow, so we must buy an expensive generator now."
Answer
Check the local official weather service first. If an adult decides preparation is needed, check that torches work and contact details are current. There is no evidence that ENSO causes tomorrow's outage, and this unit gives no basis for a purchase.
6. Write one small testable question about ENSO and winter.
Answer
Example: in a fixed list of past winters, using the same station and the same normal period, is the warm-winter share different for one ENSO category? You still need legal data, category definitions, the sample range, a missing-data rule and counterexamples. This is a proposal, not a conclusion.
