El Niño Learning Season 2026–27

Everyone forecasts the same thing: tomorrow's high temperature at Boston Logan airport. The forecast is sealed before the cutoff and checked against the NWS daily climate report. Around that small, honest loop sits a bigger question: the tropical Pacific is in a strong El Niño, so what can, and what cannot, one city's weather tell us about it?

Current ENSO status comes from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, not from us. As of the CPC ENSO Diagnostic Discussion issued 8 October 2026: El Niño Advisory; the next discussion was scheduled for 12 November 2026. Recheck the CPC discussion page before you teach.

Learning path: six units, six rounds

Each unit is one 60-minute lesson plus one 20-minute round touch (seal before the cutoff, review after the reveal). Order: task first, short reading on demand, then a piece of work. Units are free and need no account; your progress is saved only in this browser.

The 20-minute round flow (same for every unit)

3 minLook at the station and the climate day; each learner says what exactly is being forecast.
5 minLook at public data or a historical sample the teacher provides; estimate a high first.
5 minEnter the forecast and an optional one-line reason; get the receipt; the teacher checks the cutoff.
5 minAfter the reveal: read the observation, compute the absolute error, name one method to change.
2 minThe guardian sees a private summary and decides whether to continue.

Historical practice and real before-the-fact forecasts are always labelled separately.

The season practises these points from the RUDO math breakpoint system (m510). Each code names a place where learners often get stuck; the units give them a real reason to get unstuck.

Four honest boundaries

  1. Synthetic and real data are always labelled apart.
  2. One round does not show skill.
  3. "Cannot tell" is not the same as "does not exist".
  4. Records have their own biases (for example, weaker snowstorms were rarely ranked before 2000), so the challenge only uses variables measured the same way throughout.
